Common Tax Filing Mistakes We See Every Year
Most delays and IRS notices trace back to a small handful of avoidable mistakes: wrong or mismatched Social Security numbers, missing income forms, and math or entry errors from filing without a second set of eyes on the return.
Name and SSN/ITIN mismatches
If the name and Social Security number or ITIN on the return don’t exactly match what the Social Security Administration or IRS has on file — including for dependents — it can delay processing or trigger a notice.
Missing income
A 1099 you forgot about, a small side job, or interest from a savings account are all reported to the IRS independently of your return. If your return does not include them, the mismatch usually generates a letter later.
Filing status and dependent errors
Choosing the wrong filing status, or claiming a dependent that someone else has also claimed, are both common and both slow things down significantly while the IRS sorts it out.
Bank account and address errors
A single wrong digit in a bank routing or account number can send your refund to the wrong place. Double-checking this before filing is one of the simplest ways to avoid a real headache.
Common questions
What happens if I already filed and realize I made a mistake?
In many cases the return can be amended. Bring us what you filed and we will tell you whether an amendment is needed and how the process works.
Can a mistake trigger an IRS audit?
A simple mistake is more likely to trigger a notice asking for clarification than a full audit. If you do receive an audit or notice, our office has an IRS Enrolled Agent available to assist with eligible IRS matters and taxpayer representation.
